About this race
Rat Race Sea to Summit Scafell Pike is a 31 mile mountain ultramarathon starting on the beach in Seascale, on the Cumbrian coast, with event HQ at Seascale Sports Hall. From the seaside start line, the course heads inland on quiet country lanes towards the peaks of the Lake District, before hitting the trails around Wasdale and tracing the shore of Wast Water, one of England's most dramatic lakes. From there the route begins a genuine ascent of Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, before a different descent brings runners full circle back to the coast where they began. The course is a mix of around 60% trail and 40% road, taking in rugged mountain terrain as well as gentler valley paths. Fully waymarked with orange arrows and supported by professional mountain safety staff, it forms one leg of the wider UK Sea to Summit Trilogy alongside Ben Nevis and Yr Wyddfa.
