About this race

The Big Night Out 22km is a circular trail run starting and finishing at Winchester Athletics Track in Bar End, Winchester. Leaving the track under cover of darkness, runners head out of the city and onto the South Downs Way, climbing steadily up to Cheesefoot Head for panoramic night-time views over the surrounding countryside. The route then runs over Fawley Down towards Morestead, completing a circular loop before descending back down Cheesefoot Head and crossing onto MOD land at Deacons Hill, where it joins the shorter 12km route and the Pilgrims Trail back towards Winchester via St Catherines Hill. The final stretch follows the Itchen Way along the river back to the track. The terrain is genuine off-road chalk downland and riverside trail throughout, with a sustained climb to Cheesefoot Head as the main test. Head torches are compulsory, and the course is fully signed with fluorescent markers.
