About this race
The Black Cattle Ultra 33 mile is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon starting in the market town of Abergavenny, 11 miles into the longer 44 mile route, and finishing at Cardiff Harlequins RFC. The race opens with the Blorenge, a substantial climb straight out of Abergavenny, before the route winds through the historic towns of Pontypool and Risca. From there it continues past the Machen area and along the Cefn Onn ridge, before descending into Cardiff via the fairy tale Castell Coch. The course is unmarked, following Cambrian Way markers before switching to the Taff Trail for the final few miles into the finish, so self-navigation is required. The terrain is a genuine mix of mountain and hill paths, forest tracks and village lanes, with two indoor aid stations along the route and a midnight cut-off at the Harlequins ground.
